Lola is really weak and listless today. I thought perhaps the blood would pick her up a bit, but she's just exhausted. The nurse explained that her bone marrow is taking longer each time to recover and it's really wiping her out. We bought seeds and plants yesterday on the way home from the hospital and Lola was desperate to sow some (indoors!) today. She has plans for a patch of her own in the garden and has chosen flowers and tomato plants! It was hard to see her sitting on the floor trying to muster the energy to spoon compost into a plant pot, and immediately she had done, she went back to the sofa to sleep.

Lola has cramps in her legs, most probably due to lack of water, but she is a reluctant drinker (unlike her mum!). 1500mls feels like a lot when your powers of persuasion are waning and I'm trying hard not to resort to the threat of a nose tube because I know she's trying. Greta wants me to mention that she has a lovely big verrucca on her foot and Nancy says she is excited that she will be starting her guitar lessons again on Friday.

We heard from a Macmillan Nurse in Birmingham tonight, who has kindly answered a number of our questions over the phone. It looks like we won't manage a consultation with the surgeon prior to the op as he only has next Tuesday free and we are in Ipswich having kidney filtration and heart tests. She explained that the incision will be on the front of Lola's arm, to the right of her muscle and stretching from shoulder to elbow. They may not stitch her, but use glue and staples instead, to reduce scarring. It's not clear if she will have a cast, but it is most likely she will have a back slab to protect the shoulder and a sling to support the arm. The operation takes from 2 to 4 hours and, if all goes well, she may be out after a week. Analgesics will be dripped directly to her shoulder and a plentiful supply of pain relief given. And clothes??.... Lola is going to need big zip front hoodies apparently!.... i feel a trip to H & M coming on....

The most striking thing the nurse said to us was to remember that, by the end of the week after next, Lola won't have the cancer in her body any more.

  3. What an uplifting entry to read first thing in the morning - rock on surgeon! Lola - we shall have to have a competition to see whose tonatoes are the biggest and tastiest???
And Greta - thank you for sharing the astounding news about your cheesy foot. And Nancy, Lawrence will be very jealous as he really wants to start his guitar lessons again - i heard on the radio yesterday that Wild Thing is a very easy to learn to play as it only has 3 chords!!

  4. I knew the veruca news already - Eva was very excited about it. It was the first thing she told me when I picked her up from yours last week. Nancy - I challenge you to a Guitar Hero Wii session! I would be a bit disappointed if I were Lola..... surely she wants a great big interesting scar to use for making up stories about lion/shark attacks etc!

  6. Hello from Leesa, Lucy and Fiona - catching up on your progress Lola - and Helen. Its incredible how the doctors and nurses are so skilled and there are so many different specialisms working with you both. Roll on NHS - we all need to fight any govenrment that introduces cuts that reduces this amazing work.
We think of you lots and send you all our love and hugs - your strength comes pulsing through your words and blog. Spring and a stong farewell to the cancer is around the corner. Love to you all. PS we have a pink ukalele still in its box. There is a fantastic CD -very entertaining with Ukalele (huge variety) called Ummmm - can't find it but when I do will let you know.

  7. hi Lola, just to let you know we are thinking about you, Birmingham is a great place, make sure you practise the accent before you go and remember when u say 'you" it has to be pronounced as if it rhymes with cow.
Life here in Brunei s still hot, we had to go out and buy a paddling pool to put on the balcony and put our feet in. we have ahd monkeys in the classroom again, they go and get the hats and chew them. and my friend passed a load of monkeys pulling washing of a line and then when she went home she saw one of them trying on a shirt! My stupid cat got lost last week and went back to our old flat, and i spent 1.5 hours trying to persuade he ro come down, food, toys, even took her crying kitten round to get her to come, but the kitten stopped crying. in the end had to get the key to the flat! she is so stupid!
Hope ur sister's skuzzy foot is better, dont go too near it!
good luck in birmingham...big mee goreng flavoured kisses from Brunei
